Rochester Property Owner Gets “The Pirate Letter”

Radio World - Fri, 09/16/2022 - 13:44

The FCC has sent another letter notifying a property owner about apparent pirate radio activity.

This time the notice went to Ann Marie Torres, the owner of a property in Rochester, N.Y.

The New York office of the Enforcement Bureau said its agents used direction-finding equipment to trace radio signals on 87.7 MHz coming from the address in August.

As with other recent notification letters, this one informs the property owner: “Under section 511(a) of the Act, persons or entities found to willfully and knowingly suffer (i.e., permit) a third party to engage in so-called ‘pirate radio’ broadcasting on their property can face significant financial penalties,” and that there could be financial penalties as high as $2.1 million.

The Right Way To Handle a PR Crisis … Even When It’s On-Air

Radio+Television Business Report - Fri, 09/16/2022 - 12:00
In Canada, the recent dismissal of a CTV News veteran television anchor largely popular with viewers, Lisa LaFlamme, dominated headlines. How CTV News handled her departure was a bit part of the news coverage from competing outlets, as it was widely panned. With LaFlamme hired by Rogers’ CityTV to serve as a special correspondent covering the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the bad PR hasn’t exactly ebbed for CTV and parent Bell Media, which already generated press for a series of radio division reduction-in-force initiatives. For communications, media and public relations pro Eric Yaverbaum, such PR crises can be avoided, even when it involves an on-air broadcast gone wrong. Please Login to view this premium content. Promotion Granted by iHeart Following Corvino Shift

Radio+Television Business Report - Fri, 09/16/2022 - 10:30

On Thursday, iHeartMedia Division President Scott Hopeck confirmed to Streamline Publishing’s Radio Ink that Market Presidents Kelly Kibler (Dallas) and Matt Martin (San Antonio and Austin) are no longer with the company.

With Detroit Region President Paul Corvino now overseeing the three Lone Star markets as Region President, iHeartMedia has moved to fill Corvino’s shoes in the Motor City by promoting from within.

Now in the role of Metro President for iHeartMedia in Detroit is Colleen Grant, who rises from SVP of Sales.

With the elevation to Metro President, Grant now has full oversight of a collection of radio brands comprised of resurgent R&B-formatted WJLB-FM, Adult Contemporary WNIC-FM, Adult R&B WMXD-FM, Top 40 WKQI “Channel 95.5,” Classic Rock WLLZ “Detroit’s Wheels,” and BIN: Black Information Network affiliate WDFN-AM 1130.

Grant reports to Tom McConnell, Division President for iHeartMedia. “Colleen has been instrumental to the success in Detroit,” McConnell said. “She has created a culture of high performance, accountability and respect and is the perfect choice to lead the Detroit market.”

Grant’s previous roles include Region Vice President of Automotive for iHeartMedia’s Detroit Region.

“This is a childhood dream come true for me,” Grant said. “Having a father who was the General Manager of television stations, I’d always wanted to oversee stations as he did. I saw the care for people it required, the creativity necessary to generate growth, and his commitment to the community. These are the things I plan to bring to this opportunity and I couldn’t be more excited to do it.”

KBA Prepares for Strong Return to Annual Conference

Radio World - Thu, 09/15/2022 - 17:30

The Kentucky Association of Broadcasters is gearing up for its 2022 KBA Membership Conference, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 through Tuesday, Sept. 27 in Owensboro, Ky.

Roger Gribbins

Leading up to the event, Roger Gribbins, the director of member services for KBA, said the association is getting “incredible feedback” from the state’s broadcasters.

“Attendance confirmations have far exceeded our early projections when we first started working on the conference,” said Gribbins. “This is our first in-person conference in three years due to COVID and our state broadcasters are really excited to all be together again under one roof.”

Gribbins said participation for what is normally an annual conference is always relatively strong, “but we feel this year will be the largest attendance in many years.”

He told Radio World that KBA has sold out its 12 available sponsorship opportunities as well as its 25 exhibitor booths. Confirmed sponsors include the Associated Press, Nielsen and Digigram, to name a few.

“Sponsors and exhibitors have really stepped up to the plate this year for us.”

A variety of professional development breakout sessions will be held throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday, encompassing sales, management and engineering topics, among others.

Monday evening will feature “An Evening of Broadcast Excellence” — an awards dinner that Gribbins said will honor Kentucky’s radio and television broadcasters “while also recognizing the legends that have paved the way.” The KBA’s “Excellence in Broadcasting,” “Legacy” and “Kentucky Mic Hall of Fame” Awards will all be presented.

Gribbins said the conference is also set to open and close with notable performances and speakers.

“We have an incredible line-up this year that attendees are really excited about: Racing icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be our keynote speaker, and country music legends The Kentucky Headhunters will play our ‘After Awards Show’ party,” he said. “I truly feel this will be one of the best conferences the KBA has ever presented.”

On Wall Street, iHeartMedia Shows Resilience

Radio+Television Business Report - Thu, 09/15/2022 - 16:36

With recent declines in value from industry peers Audacy Corp. and Beasley Media Group attracting attention, one story that’s perhaps been underreported is that involving the stock performance of iHeartMedia.

Given all of the external noise impacting companies across multiple industries, IHRT has proven to be a strong performer in the broadcast media sector across the third quarter.

At the Closing Bell on Thursday, iHeartMedia shares were priced at $10.44, up 3.2% from Wednesday.

That’s a closing price last seen on June 9, and suggests investors are highly pleased with the efforts led by CEO Bob Pittman and COO/CFO Rich Bressler (pictured) at the nation’s No. 1 audio content creation and distribution company.

On July 14, IHRT was priced some $4 per share lower than where it is today, finishing at $6.43. Since then, a healthy growth trend has transpired, with analysts sticking to a 1-year price target of $13.38 for IHRT.

While iHeartMedia’s radio stations are certainly a big segment for the company, perhaps investors are intrigued by its growing metaverse imprint. On September 14, “iHeartLand” launched on Roblox, “where everyone can be a music tycoon.”

An Arizona Feud Involving Entravision Nears Its Conclusion

Radio+Television Business Report - Thu, 09/15/2022 - 16:10

On July 23, 2019, Entravision Communications filed an application proposing to upgrade one of its stations serving the Phoenix market. However, this required the involuntary move of a facility serving Prescott Valley, Ariz. A squabble over reimbursement by Entravision for the change commenced, leading to a January 2022 FCC Order that appeared to finally put the wheels in motion.

It appears that wasn’t the case. A new ruling from the Commission may finally push the process along.
