Starting today and running through April 19, the FCC has opened a filing window for a group of 639 applicants that were identified by the FCC as being located within spectrum limited markets or outside the market but within 39 km of the "grid" of a spectrum limited market.  Applicants are required to make a showing that their application does not prevent an LPFM opportunity at the identified protected channel points.

Jingle producer and promoter, Ben Freedman dead at 64

By admin | 5:27 PM EST, Sat January 12, 2013

The broadcast community has lost a very interesting person..  Ben Freedman, who has been battling health issues has passed away on January 11, 2013 at the age of 64.

Freedman was well known for some very essentric methods of selling jingles and production elements to radio stations, especially to non-commercial, internet and LPFM stations that operated on tight budgets as well as strangely named products such as "Jingle University " and "The Instant Radio Station".

REC asks FCC to "fix" LPFM announcements rule

By admin | 11:49 AM EST, Sat January 12, 2013

REC has filed a Petition for Partial Reconsideration on the recent Report and Order. The REC petition is asking the FCC to fix only one aspect of the recent rule changes, the determination of which new LPFM stations would be required to carry "periodic announcements" under Section 7 of the Local Community Radio Act.

The LCRA calls for new LPFM stations on the third adjacent channel of a full service FM station (or translator) to carry "periodic annoucnements" informing listeners how to file an interference complaint in the event that the LPFM station is interfering with the listening of the full power station.
